Akai XR20
The XR20 sports a very traditional design with the LCD taking up the top left corner of the front panel. Beneath it, you'll find the 12 pads that are used to trigger sounds on the XR20. These can be either drums, 1-shot, and synth or entire patterns if you are in Pattern Play Mode. Next to these are the Pad Pay Buttons, which are used to select which sounds you want to be triggered by the pads. The Value Dial takes up the top right corner of the front panel and is used to increment and decrement values and settings. Alternatively, you can use the INC/DEC buttons below the dial to do the same. Directly below these are the Page Right / Left buttons for navigating between pages of options when browsing through menus and settings. The XR20 also has number buttons if you prefer inputting values directly. The middle of the front panel is dedicated to various Mode, Setup, Transport Control Buttons, and other general controls.

Alesis SR-16
As one of the most popular drum machines ever made, the SR-16? has been used by everyone from songwriters to live performers to remix engineers as their drum machine of choice. Roland CR-78 W/Midi
The CR-78 is a really great little box from Roland. It's a classic analog Rhythm Machine, not a drum machine, and was the first to use a microprocessor. It has 34 built in preset rhythm patterns which can be varied at the push of a button. These patterns include Rock, Disco, Waltz, Shuffle, Slow Rock, Swing, Fox Trot, Tango, etc... Some are cool, but the ability to vary them gives you some creative control. As for the drum sounds, the CR-78 offers 14 very electronic yet analog drum tones. Sounds include Kick, Snare, Rim, Cow Bell, HiHats, Cymbals, Congas, Bongos, Tambourine and Guiros. With 11 variation effects and the ability to adjust Tempo, accents, and fade in/outs the CR-78 is still capable of producing nice rhythms for use in ambient, HipHop, dub, and other electronic forms of music.

Roland SPD-30
With a redesigned layout, the Roland SPD-30 is optimized to handle the playing of even the most punishing drummers. For starters, it's got a super-strong display sturdy enough to standup to all those misplaced stick hits that are bound to be a regular occurrence. Complete isolation between pads eliminates cross-talk (when you hit one pad, it won't accidentally trigger its neighbor), and the triggers themselves are evenly distributed all the way across each pad. This is an extremely important feature that frees the percussionist from worrying about stick placement: even if you strike the edge of a pad, it will sound as clearly as if you hit it dead-center. And, for low-light situations, pad indicator lights show exactly where each pad is and let's face it, what club/bar/stage isn't a low-light situation?
